Comets are a funny bunch. They aren't as rocky or metallic as asteroids. They aren't shooting stars or meteors. They don't streak across the sky in the blink of an eye. When we see them in the sky, they aren't all that close to Earth (by meteoric standards). But asteroids, meteors, and comets are all related. Asteroids generally congregate in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. But they can be found outside the asteroid belt also. There are two large groups of asteroids known as Trojans that share an orbital path with Jupiter. A Monochromatic Eagle and Swan

This avian duo sits near the center of our galaxy from our perspective. The two nebula are prominent features in larger binoculars under dark skies and show up quite easily in photographs of this part of the night sky. Also referred to as M16 (The Eagle Nebula) and M17 (The Swan, Omega, or Lobster Nebula), both nebula glow due to the presence of hydrogen that's had an electron energized by the radiation of a nearby star, causing the electron to orbit at a higher energy level. The electron then wants to move back to a lower energy orbit and must give off a photon to do so. The red light our eyes and cameras capture is the result of that electron moving to a lower energy orbit and releasing a photon with a wavelength of 656.28 nanometers. Light from M82's Supernova Finds GMARS

You've probably heard about the supernova in M82 by now. Seeing supernovae from Earth is relatively common. Each instance offers an opportunity for astronomers to learn more about them, refine their calculations and calibrate their instruments. Supernovae of the type "Ia" are especially important and useful because they occur when a star reaches a particular mass, regardless of where in the universe they occur. They act as a "standard candle" allowing astronomers to accurately measure stellar and galactic distances. When the SN is close (in astronomical terms) it makes gathering that data and refining those calculations a bit easier. At a mere 11.4 million light years, M82 is our neighbor, maybe just 3 or 4 houses down the street.
